"Greater percentage of the world population live in urban areas and the figure keeps rising. The UN-Habitat and UNPFA- United Nations Population Fund have projected that 75% of the world’s population (7.7 billion) would be living in urban areas by the year 2050. This necessitates the need to train urban and regional planners locally and globally to guide physical growth of urban areas through design, implementation and management of development and land use activities at local, regional and national levels, and taking into consideration rural development. Planning is a dynamic profession geared towards creating livable and environmentally friendly communities/societies/cities for the ever-increasing human population. This profession is highly needed in repositioning our society to compete favourably with developed societies especially in the provision of healthy and equitable cities. Nigeria’s urban and rural areas require an innovative approach in addressing planning and developmental challenges. Therefore, there is an urgent need for individuals with creativity and innovative minds that can integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience in coming out with positive and sustainable solutions. The graduates of Urban and Regional Planning can contribute in building a sustainable society. With the advancement in technology and innovation, planning is becoming sophisticated as it applies them in making human settlements habitable."
